Cortez over Lizard Head Pass to Montrose, Colorado
Our original plans had us driving through Durango and up Red Mountain pass to Montrose. We choose instead to alter our plans and head through Dolores and up over Lizard Head Pass.
I don’t know what Red Mountain looks like, but we thoroughly enjoyed the Dolores/Rico valley and the spectacular scenery on Lizard Head and down past Telluride.
Stunning! And our highest drive to date! 10,222 feet.
There is still a bit of snow on the mountains, and we had some good puffy clouds to highlight the view. The Dallas Divide was very pretty and the drive into Ridgeway was very nice. With several ‘vista’ viewpoint’ stops on our way, we pulled into Montrose, and our friend Steve’s house about 1pm.

Steve, a birder friend from Desert Trails RV Park in Tucson, was game for a few days of playing ‘bird guide’as well as letting us park the rig in his driveway! Local knowledge is always good, and this was no exception. A short drive over to a neighbor’s farm got Tom a new life bird, the Bobolink. We took a drive to Delta for dinner at Davita’s Italian food and it did not disappoint! With full bellies, we slept well.
