Costa Rica - Bosque Del Tolomuco

It's Thursday morning, we're up early again, to head up the mountain to Bosque De Tolumuco, a birding retreat and lodge located about 6000’ elevation.

We arrived at 5:45 and were given permission to wander the property and trails for a $5.00 pp fee.  Rolf and Lise, the owners for 18yrs have an amazing property.  The grounds are well stocked with feeding platforms and hummingbird feeders.

The property covers 50 + acres, of which over the years, they’ve returned to native plants and trees from the grazed pastures when the bought the place.

We wandered the area around the house and cabins checking out the action on the feeders.

On one feeder, the Capuchin, or white faced monkeys were doing a good job of rapidly devouring all the fruit that had been placed for the birds. This one would take a bit or two from the banana, then toss it down and take one or two bites of the next piece.

While it looks ferocious, I think it’s going into a food coma and is yawning!

There are several glass butterflies here, and I was lucky enough to capture a bit of this one.  You can see the light through parts of the wings on the butterfly below.

Unfortunately, these two were in the pool, and not real happy about it, I’m sure.

I was enjoying the patterns in the surface and the blue tiles below.  I got a few shots off, then rescued both.

Coming out to dry off.

I have seen a few mushrooms and some other fungus, but these were so tiny and all clustered together. They are about the size of a pencil eraser.

One final shot of some very pretty flowers on a large bush before we head back down the hill and back to Quizarra.  We’ve a date to go birding this afternoon with Susana and Chris at the bed and breakfast we’re staying at today.
