San Quintin to ?
Monday Feb 5 San Quintin
We left at 8:30 this morning with a destination of Meling
Ranch at San Pedro Martir. We had been
told that the ranch was 25 miles off of the highway, and we could leave the trailer
there.
From that point, we’d have another 25 miles to climb up the
hill to the top where there is an observatory and a California Condor rescue
station.
The road, while paved, was quite narrow and had several switchbacks. We started up the hill, and at about mile
18-20 questioned what we were doing. It
was really steep, about 40+ degrees, and follows the ridge of the
mountain. As we rounded a corner we
spotted a pullout. We stopped and
allowed the truck and transmission to cool down. We didn’t continue on. Tom maneuvered a well done 6-point turn-around
in this very small turn out, and back down the hill we went.
Disappointing yes, but our safety and that of our home and
vehicle were most important. We looked
for a spot to park the trailer on the way back down, but didn’t find anything
suitable or secure enough to unhitch and drive away for several hours. And that wasn't what we had planned. We'll have to do this trip with just the truck another time.
We continued on into Ensenada and ended up at
Estero Beach Resort and RV park. We’re
going to see what we can do about repairs.
