Costa Rica- Mamon Season
When in Rome, right? It’s the season for Mamons now. It’s a weird fruit, not a really friendly one at first glance.
I wonder who was the first person to peel back the soft but leathery, prickly coating to find the grape like white substance underneath?
The eater then nibbles the white ‘fruit’ off of the seed inside. It tastes like a sweet grape, just without a lot of the juice. I can’t say that I’d go out of my way to purchase a bag of these – they’re sold on almost every corner in every town we’ve driven through. They just seem to be a lot of effort for a so-so reward!
