Our next location takes us to the wetland area of Caño Negro, about 13km south of the Nicaragua border. We’re staying at the Caño Negro Wetlands Lodge, located alongside the wetland area. And it’s wet here!

The typical weather pattern is rain, followed by clearing, then maybe some showers, a bit of clearing, a downpour, more rain and maybe some clearing for a peak at a sunset. At any time during the day, this pattern can be switched around!

We are supposed to be at the end of the wet season, however, most of the locals are shaking their heads at the amount of rain, and that it really hasn’t stopped yet! Go figure!

Our host, Alvaro, drained the pool and prepped it for painting. He’s been waiting 2 weeks for 2 clear and dry days to repaint it. The pool now has about 6 inches in the bottom, most of it received while we were here!

| Rio Frio and the rain |
The weather still hasn’t stopped us. We signed up for a morning river tour on the Rio Frio that runs through this area. It’s quite like going through the billabongs in Darwin Australia, and the weather on this morning was pretty much the same! Pouring rain!

We were still able to see quite a few birds and other critters.

A choking Jabiru? We had three nights here and did some exploring around the countryside. Our goal was to find the Jabiru. After our morning boat tour, we headed off to find it. We were successful. We watched from a long distance away as it poked a turtle for several minutes. I guess it finally smooshed it enough to swallow, but then it stood in the field and we could see it trying to swallow. Even from a couple hundred yards away, I could see the bulge in the throat and its apparent discomfort! |
It cleared up enough for some waterdrop shots of this cool zig-zag plant on the side of the road.
