Glenwood Springs to Steamboat Springs

The steep canyon walls of Glenwood Canyon and 2 level highway.

As we’ve traveled from Arizona, New Mexico and now in Colorado, there have been quite a few vistas, scenes and roads on this trip that have been jaw-dropping awesome, and inspired the question ‘how did they build this road?’. Traveling through Glenwood Canyon on the way to Steamboat Springs was no different.  Unfortunately, there are no pull outs and the speed through here is posted at 65mph, so one is limited to shots out the window!

Steamboat Springs, our northern most stop on this trip, is home to Gail and Dave, friends we met at the RV park in Tucson.  They hosted us for 3 days at their home before we loaded up both of our trailers and headed to their camping property on Gore Pass.

Our first afternoon we spent touring local sights, including Fish Creek Falls, 10 minutes from their home, where Gail once was a park volunteer.

Fish Creek Falls

The water off of the falls was just about at its peak, as most of the snow pack is just about gone.

A yellow-bellied Marmot!

After our hike, we headed to Stagecoach reservoir to check out the birding for both Tom and Gail.  In the 40 or so minutes we were there, ‘we’ spotted 33 different species.  The two birders were pleased, the other two enjoyed the ride!

The glitter under Tom's feet is ice crystals!  All the cold weather gear was worn this morning!

Since Gail tends to be more of an 'owl' person, Tom and I got up and out early one morning for a bird walk on the frosty Rotary Club boardwalk in town along Uncompaghre river.

A scenic view in Steamboat Springs

It’s refreshing to my eyes, to see green farmland and wide-open spaces surrounded by mountains and hills. Flowers and blossoms were popping so the colors seemed especially vibrant.
