Daybreak on the way to Gooseneck State Park. Smoke on the horizon from the fires.
The morning comes early when you want to get sunrise shots at certain locations. With the temperatures getting so hot by about 10:30 or so, which creates amazing heat waves, and the colors just flatten out in the harsh light, we've had to adjust our out and about times.
Gooseneck State Park is an impressive example of an entrenched river meander. The San Juan River twists and turns and flows over a distance of 6 miles while only advancing one and half miles on its way to Lake Powell. The river is 1000' feet below us and there are no railings at this viewpoint!

The soft glow of sunrise on the hillside above the canyon.
We've started to head out early, most days just at daybreak, explore and shoot till about 11when we'd head back to camp. A good meal, and a nap along with photo editing, or laundry or other chores before we'd head out again in the late afternoon.

Tom scouts out other angles on the river for me.

The daylight just kisses the edge of the canyon. The pink clouds are smoke.

We made one more pass to check out the light at 9:30, a worthwhile stop.

The bonus was this group of rafters/ paddle boarders heading down the river.
